Quick Overview

Photographer Chris Winters spent five years obsessed with the oldest steamship on the sweetwater seas, tracking her, shooting her at daybreak from bridges, at midnight from canal shorelines, around the clock on the ship herself. The resulting book, Centennial, Steaming Through The American Century, is a remarkable portrait of the relationship between crewmen, their ship and the open waters of the Great Lakes.

Featured in the December issue of Traverse, Northern Michigan's Magazine When the St. Marys Challenger was launched from the Great Lakes Engineering Works at Ecorse, Michigan on February 17, 1906, Teddy Roosevelt was in the White House and the R.M.S. Titanic was still a shipbuilder's fantasy. As time passed and the lake fleet dwindled, this stalwart ship, an active relic of America's Industrial past, quietly emerged as one of the most unique vessels in the history of maritime commerce. In this large (10 7/8 inches by 10 1/8 inches) coffee table book, 240 pages of lush photography celebrate her story and the lives of those who have worked with her for 100 years.
